Cobb County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. Its county seat and largest city is Marietta, located in the center of the county. The county was named for Thomas Willis Cobb, who in the early 19th century was a United States representative and senator from Georgia. Marietta was named for his wife, Mary Cobb (born Mary Moore), who died before his own 1830 death. Cobb, along with several other counties in the same bill, was created December 3, 1832 by the Georgia General Assembly from the huge Cherokee "county" territory — land northwest of the Chattahoochee River which the state confiscated from the Cherokee Nation and redistributed to settlers via lottery, following the passage of the federal Indian Removal Act.
